On May 9, 2000, he had a quadruple heart bypass treatment at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia.
As a consequence of a fall, Griffith had hip surgery on September 5, 2007, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
Griffith died of a heart attack in his Manteo, North Carolina, home on July 3, 2012, at the age of 86.
On his death certificate, the underlying medical issues stated were hypertension, coronary artery disease, and hyperlipidemia.
